Settled in the early 1800s by upstate New Yorkers, Lake Orion grew quickly into a bustling commercial center thanks to the local sawmill, and the power dam which formed what is now the 506-acre namesake lake. Fun fact: Lake Orion was a popular vacation spot in the early 1900s and prompted the formation of the country’s first marine postal service!

Technically, Lake Orion is the original downtown village of Orion Township. Most of the homes are actually in Orion Township, but everyone refers to both as “Lake Orion.” There are good schools, community services, and the outdoor recreational activities are unsurpassed. Lake Orion is a wonderful and highly-sought after place to call home, so much so that the city slogan is “where living is a vacation.”

The Schools

Lake Orion is home to an award-winning Blue Ribbon school district. The district is known for its aims to guide students with extensive collegiate and real-world preparation and application. This means a lot of Wolverines, Spartans, and Golden Grizzlies call Lake Orion home! With a 95% graduation rate, the district of just over 7,500 students is one of the best education programs in Southeastern Michigan.

The Amenities

From a history-ladened village to over 50 miles of trails winding throughout, there’s no shortage of resident activities and adventures. Everyday shopping and essentials are located in convenient clusters around the neighborhoods. Cider and donuts from Yates Cider Mill are a must before exploring Canterbury Village for its community events and local vendors. Within a mile of any community, you will find a state or county park, a lake, and hiking and biking trails. Outdoor include Green’s Park, Orion Oaks, Bark Park, and Bald Mountain State Recreation Area.
